Žrtva 2117

Jussi Adler-Olsen

The newspaper refers to the deceased only as Victim 2117 - the two thousand one hundred and seventeenth refugee to lose her life in the Mediterranean Sea that year. But for three people, this victim is much more than that... "Victim 2117" is the eighth no

The story begins with the discovery of the body of an elderly woman on the shores of Cyprus, referred to by the media only as “Victim 2117” – the 2,177th refugee to die in the Mediterranean that year. To most, she is just a number, but for three men, her death has a deeply personal meaning.

Assad, a member of Sector Q, recognizes her as Lely Kababi, the woman who cared for him and his family in Iraq. This realization opens the door to his painful past and forces him to confront his own demons.

At the same time, Ghaalib, a cruel executioner from the infamous Abu Ghraib prison, sees her death as the beginning of a terrorist operation he has been planning for years. For him, it is an opportunity for revenge and the destabilization of Europe.

In Denmark, an unstable teenager, Alexander, obsessed with violent video games, uses the death of Victim 2117 as an excuse to indulge his murderous urges, planning a mass murder.

Inspector Carl Mørck and his team from Sector Q face their most challenging case yet, where personal traumas intertwine with global threats. The race against time leads them through a complex web of past and present crimes, testing the limits of their endurance and loyalty.

“Victim 2117” is not only a suspenseful thriller, but also a profound analysis of personal trauma, terrorism and the impact of the past on the present. Adler-Olsen masterfully balances the characters’ personal stories with broader social criticism, creating a work that leaves a strong impression on the reader.
