Zagor LU maxi #34: Yukonski kozaci
The maxi edition of Yukon Cossacks, by Mirko Perniola, illustrated by Marcello Mangiantini and with a cover by Alessandro Piccinelli, continues Zagor's adventure in Alaska, begun in the previous edition of The Frozen Land.
Zagor and Čiko are in Novi Arkhangelsk, waiting for a ship to Los Angeles, when the unexpected arrival of their old friend Alexis Pougatchew draws them into a new mission. They head for Novograd, a Russian colony in Alaska, to overthrow a tyrant who publicly punishes people. The story, set in the 19th century, brings back characters like Rezanov and Igor, known from Boselli's Alaska saga, but in smaller roles.
The plot focuses on the fight against injustice, with an emphasis on Zagor's courage and Čiko's comic role. In Novograd, they clash with corrupt authorities, while an American expedition, led by officer Stryker and geologist Northup, explores the territory for the possible purchase of Alaska from Russia. The story explores political intrigue and conflicts between colonial powers, with elements of action and adventure. Perniola introduces the Cossacks as secondary characters, while Zagor uncovers the conspiracy and saves the innocent.
Mangiantini's drawing brings a dynamic atmosphere, although critics have pointed out confusing elements, such as illogicality in the dialogues (eg Russians speak English) and occasional anachronisms. The story has been criticized as drawn out, but it retains the classic charm of Zagorje with a focus on justice and the fight against tyranny. This edition, while not reaching the heights of Boselli's episodes, provides a solid adventure with an emphasis on the exotic setting of Alaska.
