Charles Hayward, zaručnik Aristideove unuke Sophije, mladi je detektiv koji preuzima istragu na Sophijin zahtjev. Sophia sumnja da je ubojica netko iz obitelji, jer svi žive zajedno u vili punoj napetosti i tajni. Obitelj uključuje Aristideovu mladu suprugu Brendu, njegovu djecu Philipa i Rogera, njihovu snahu, šurjaka, te unuke, uključujući Josephine, djevojčicu opsjednutu detektivskim pričama. Svi imaju potencijalne motive – pohlepu, ljubomoru ili skrivene sukobe.

Charles, uz pomoć inspektora Tavernera i svog oca, policijskog službenika, istražuje složene obiteljske odnose. Brenda i njezin ljubavnik Laurence postaju glavni osumnjičeni, no dokazi su nejasni. Neočekivani obrat otkriva da je ubojica Josephine, koja je iz ljubomore i želje za pažnjom otrovala djeda. Priča kulminira tragično kada Josephine izazove nesreću u kojoj i sama strada.

Roman istražuje mračnu stranu obiteljskih veza, pohlepe i skrivenog zla. Christie ga je smatrala jednim od svojih najboljih djela zbog šokantnog završetka i napete atmosfere.
