Crooked House

Agatha Christie

"Crooked House" is the luxurious mansion of the Leonides family, so named for its unusual architecture. Aristide Leonides is found dead, and at first it appears that he died of natural causes. However, it is revealed that he was poisoned with eserine, wh

Charles Hayward, the fiancé of Aristide's granddaughter Sophia, is a young detective who takes on the investigation at Sophia's request. Sophia suspects the killer is a family member, as they all live together in a mansion full of tension and secrets. The family includes Aristide's young wife Brenda, his children Philip and Roger, their daughter-in-law, brother-in-law, and granddaughters, including Josephine, a girl obsessed with detective stories. All have potential motives - greed, jealousy, or hidden conflicts.

Charles, with the help of Inspector Taverner and his father, a police officer, investigates the complex family relationships. Brenda and her lover Laurence become the prime suspects, but the evidence is unclear. An unexpected twist reveals that the killer is Josephine, who poisoned her grandfather out of jealousy and a desire for attention. The story culminates tragically when Josephine causes an accident in which she herself dies.

The novel explores the dark side of family ties, greed, and hidden evil. Christie considered it one of her best works because of its shocking ending and tense atmosphere.
