„Priče o golicanju“ sastoje se od 30 kratkih priča podeljenih u tri „dekade“ (décamérons), po uzoru na Bokačov Dekameron.

Smeštene u imaginarni svet francuskog srednjeg veka, priče su ispunjene humorom, ironijom i erotskim podtekstom, često ismevajući društvene norme, licemerje sveštenstva i aristokratije i ljudske slabosti. Likovi su živopisni - od lukavih seljaka i prevarnih monaha do strastvenih plemića i duhovitih žena. Balzak koristi arhaičan, gotovo parodijski stil jezika da bi evocirao duh 16. veka, ali istovremeno istražuje univerzalne teme poput ljubavi, pohote, pohlepe i moći.
