Tickling Stories besteht aus 30 Kurzgeschichten, die in drei „Jahrzehnte“ (Décamérons) unterteilt sind und Boccaccios Decamerone nachempfunden sind.

Die Geschichten spielen in der Fantasiewelt des französischen Mittelalters und sind voller Humor, Ironie und erotischer Untertöne. Sie verspotten oft gesellschaftliche Normen, die Heuchelei von Klerus und Adel sowie menschliche Schwächen. Die Charaktere sind vielfältig – von listigen Bauern und betrügerischen Mönchen bis hin zu leidenschaftlichen Adligen und geistreichen Frauen. Balzac verwendet einen archaischen, fast parodistischen Sprachstil, um den Geist des 16. Jahrhunderts zu beschwören, behandelt aber gleichzeitig universelle Themen wie Liebe, Lust, Gier und Macht.
