Bregovi kao beli slonovi

Bregovi kao beli slonovi

Ernest Hemingway

Hemingway's style in these stories is characterized by conciseness, emotional restraint, and an emphasis on the characters' internal conflicts.

The story The Hills Are Like White Elephants is set at a train station in Spain, in the Ebro Valley, where a couple – a young woman named Jig and her American partner – are waiting for a train. Their conversation, filled with tension and unspoken emotions, revolves around the decision to have an abortion, although the word is never explicitly mentioned. The man insists that it is a "simple" procedure that will solve their problems, while Jig expresses ambivalence, contemplating the loss and consequences of the decision. Hemingway's minimalist style, known as the "iceberg technique", leaves much unsaid, allowing the reader to interpret the emotions and motives of the characters.
