Posljednji Stipančići

Posljednji Stipančići

Vjenceslav Novak

The plot of the novel The Last Stipančići is set in the first decade of the 19th century. It focuses on the decline of a patrician family and goes far back in time, to the last two generations of this family.

Through faithful descriptions, one can follow all the events on the Croatian political scene, as well as individual upheavals and the war's effects on the entire nation, but shown through the life and work of the sole protagonist, Ante Stipančić. After reading the novel, a bitter taste remains, accompanied by memories of the relationship of society towards individuals and vice versa, the relationship between spouses, the relationship of a father towards children that is anything but parental, and above all, the relationship of a son towards his mother and sister. The immense wealth that was inherited is all the pride of this family, which places all its hopes and dreams in its only son who becomes a "prodigal son", and with its frivolous lifestyle brings itself and its family to the brink of begging, not caring after the death of its father for its sick sister or its mother, who live in the worst misery, and all because of him.
