Patricia Cornwell

Patricia Cornwell, the queen of forensic thrillers, combines fiery fires with deep secrets in the eighth novel of the Kay Scarpetta series. The novel, full of adrenaline and unexpected twists, ends with a shocking conflict, leaving the reader in suspense.

The main character, Virginia's top forensics expert Kay Scarpetta, is confronted by a fire at a horse ranch near Richmond: the fire consumes the estate of her friend Karen Patterson, a wealthy widow, leaving only ashes and suspicions of foul play. While firefighters put out the flames, Scarpetta, with the help of FBI investigator Pete Marino and lover Benton Wesley, uncovers clues to a murder - Karen's body was burned, but not by accident.

The investigation leads to a web of lies: Karen's family, a daring lawyer and suspicious neighbors are hiding connections to past crimes. Scarpetta applies forensic skills - analysis of ashes, traces of arson, ballistic wounds and genetic fingerprints - to uncover connections to previous cases of serial killer Temple Gault, a white, cunning and elusive demon. The plot escalates into nighttime chases through the woods and abandoned farms, where Gault plays cat and mouse, sending Scarpetta messages through fires and symbolic signs.

Cornwell masterfully dissects forensic art—from autopsies to arson investigations—with intimate portraits: Scarpetta, a strong but vulnerable woman in a man's world, Marino with a Southern temperament, Lucy, her niece-computer expert. The themes are profound: the power of fire as destroyer and enlightener, the limits of justice versus evil, female strength in the fight against obsession.
