Ogledi o ljubavi

Ogledi o ljubavi

Alain de Botton

De Botton's debut novel, a hybrid of fiction and essay, follows the romantic love affair between the nameless narrator and Chloe – a meeting on a flight from Paris, flirtation, passion and inevitable breakdown.

Through an introspective narrative, the author analyzes love as an existential phenomenon: from the euphoria of the first kiss to the agony of jealousy, where emotions intertwine with philosophy (Plato, Schopenhauer, Proust). Love is not just a feeling; it is a projection of desires, fears and social norms – Chloe becomes an ideal, but also a mirror of imperfection.

The structure of the novel is episodic, with essayistic digressions on love letters, sex, suffering and oblivion. De Botton mocks clichés: love is not fate, but the art of dealing with uncertainty. The novel is a humorous, melancholic portrait of the 20s, where Paris and London turn into a stage of the heart.
