Dragica Cvek-Jordan

Dragica Cvek-Jordan

Tonko Maroević

As a whole, the book serves as an authoritative interpretation and valorization of the artist's oeuvre, highlighting her uniqueness and contribution to Croatian modern figuration.

Tonko Maroević's 1987 monograph on Dragica Cvek-Jordan presents a thorough critical and essayistic study of the artistic work of this Croatian artist, with an emphasis on her drawing and painting style, her development path and the aesthetic values of her work. Maroević analyses Cvek's penchant for figuration, introspection and reduction of form, highlighting her ability to achieve a strong emotional and suggestive effect with simple but precise artistic means. The book provides an overview of the key phases of her work – from earlier works marked by lyrical realism, through the increasingly pronounced synthesis of forms, to mature works dominated by quiet expressiveness, a refined sense of line and intimate tonality. Maroević pays attention to the artist's thematic preoccupations: female figures, portraits, inner states, the silence of space and meditative scenes.
