  1. Maigret istražuje ubojstvo povezano s imućnom i uglednom obitelji, ali nailazi na zid šutnje i utjecaja. Unatoč iskustvu i upornosti, teško dolazi do konkretnih dokaza jer svjedoci skrivaju istinu, a društveni položaj uključenih otežava istragu. Slučaj ga iscrpljuje i dovodi do osjećaja profesionalnog neuspjeha, jer pravda ostaje nedostižna ili nepotpuna. Roman naglašava granice policijskog rada i utjecaj društvenih struktura na istinu.

  2. Radnja se odvija u Parizu, gdje Maigret istražuje ubojstvo u stanu nasuprot zgrade pune stanara koji su mogli vidjeti ili čuti nešto važno. Svatko od njih promatrao je događaje iz svoje perspektive, ali nitko nema potpunu sliku. Maigret mora složiti istinu iz fragmenata svjedočanstava, poput slagalice. Kroz različite “sjene” i doživljaje likova otkriva pravu pozadinu zločina i međuljudske odnose koji su do njega doveli.
