Lazzarillo de Tormes

Lazzarillo de Tormes

"Lazarillo de Tormes" is a 16th-century Spanish anonymous novel and one of the most famous works of the picaresque novel.

The main character and narrator is a poor boy named Lazarillo who serves various masters throughout his life and learns about the hypocrisy and injustice of society. Lazarillo was born into a poor family. After his father's death, his mother gives him to a blind man to serve as his guide. The blind man is stingy and cruel, so Lazarillo must use cunning to survive and get food. From him, he learns how to navigate a difficult life. After that, he serves several masters: a poor nobleman who pretends to be rich, a greedy priest, and other people who appear respectable on the outside, but are actually hypocritical and selfish. Through these experiences, Lazarillo becomes increasingly resourceful and wise.
