Đorđe Matić

The collection of essays Secret Connections, subtitled Listening, Listening, is completely exceptional in its approach to music and musicians, and through them, to us here – then and now.

Đorđe Matić listens carefully and listens, probes deeply, reads carefully and penetrates - unquestionably successfully - into secret connections and meanings that many superficial listeners-consumers will simply miss, and for those who join him in (re)interpreting not only music, it will open up some new vistas and lead him to some fresh interpretations of both the music he has listened to and listens to, and the environment in which he has lived and lives. Stylistically distinctive and idiosyncratic, imaginative and meticulous, of impressive erudition and refined auditory perception, sensitive to barely audible vibrations and echoes, inclined to a multi-perspective view of the phenomena he deals with, thanks to the – hard-won – privileged position of an observer from an oblique, exiled, stateless point of view, Matić discerns nuances in semantics and draws sometimes at first glance surprising, but inexorably logical conclusions, skillfully juggling space-time associations, connecting what seems completely unconnected and broken, and bringing closer what seems hopelessly distant.
