August Šenoa

A monumental historical novel about the great peasant uprising of 1573 led by Matija Gubec. An epic portrayal of the struggle of oppressed peasants against feudal tyranny, rich in drama, vivid characters, and a faithful depiction of the 16th century.

The Peasant Revolt is one of the most significant and powerful works of August Šenoa, his most famous historical novel which is still considered the pinnacle of Croatian historical prose. Published in two volumes (books 7 and 8 of the Collected Works), this epic novel brings to life the dramatic events of the peasant uprising of 1573 in the area of Susedgrad and Stubica.

Šenoa masterfully depicts the social and national conflicts of the 16th century: the difficult life of serfs under cruel feudal lords (especially Fran Tahi), their desperate rebellion and the leadership of the uprising by Matija Gubac, Ivan Gregorić and other heroes. The novel presents a broad fresco of society – from noble castles and church circles to peasant huts – filled with tense battles, human destinies, love affairs, betrayals and heroism. Gubec stands out as a noble, just and tragic leader, a symbol of the struggle for justice and the dignity of the common man.

This edition is part of the popular and visually attractive edition of the Collected Works of August Šenoa, published by the Preporod Publishing House in Zagreb in 1942–1943. Both volumes are equipped with dynamic and expressive drawings by Andrija Maurović, which perfectly evoke the dramatic atmosphere of the uprising, battles and historical era, making this edition a true visual and collector's delight.

With its power, topicality of the theme of social injustice and exceptional storytelling skill, The Peasants' Revolt remains a classic that is read with equal excitement today. Šenoa's rich knowledge of history, lively dialogues and ability to create great characters make these two volumes an indispensable part of Croatian literary heritage.
