Među svjetlom i tminom
The novel Between Light and Darkness (1891) is based on a critique of the bureaucratic apparatus and government structures, for which reason it was censored and published with a changed ending.
The novel Between Light and Darkness depicts the social and moral life of a Slavonian village and bourgeois society at the end of the 19th century. Through the characters, Josip Kozarac explores the conflict between good and evil, honesty and selfishness, or “light” and “darkness” in man and society. The main characters face difficult life decisions, social injustices, and personal trials. Kozarac describes how some characters remain faithful to goodness and honesty (“light”), while others succumb to greed, selfishness, and immorality (“darkness”). Man always chooses between good and evil, and true peace and the value of life are found in honesty, work, and humanity.
