Pjesme: Moj izbor
It is a collection that Robert Graves personally compiled and revised several times (first published by Penguin in 1957). It presents the author's own view of his poetic work, which spanned more than six decades.
The collection includes poems from different periods: early war poems (although Graves later partially omitted them), love lyrics, mythological and archetypal motifs related to the White Goddess, and philosophical and existential themes. Graves' poems are characterized by their crystal clarity, classical form, ironic tone, and deep connection with mythology, especially Welsh and Mediterranean.
In the Croatian edition, the selection brings a cross-section of Graves's oeuvre with an emphasis on all the main themes: love and the feminine divine, the experience of war, nature, history, and myth. The poems are melodic, precise, and often mystical, and at the same time very accessible.
This collection is the best introduction to Graves's poetry - less known than his novels and mythological studies, but according to many equally valuable. Graves considered himself first and foremost a poet, and this "my selection" reveals what he himself considered the most successful.
