Isus: Razmatranja o Spasitelju

Antonin-Dalmace Sertillanges

The devotional and philosophical prose of the French Dominican A. D. Sartillanges, Jesus – Reflections on the Savior (1900), is a profound spiritual reflection on the person and mystery of Jesus Christ.

Antonin-Dalmace (Antonin-Gilbert) Sertillanges (1863–1948) was a French Dominican philosopher, theologian, and writer, known for his works on Thomas Aquinas, morality, and spirituality. In this book, the author offers a series of profound, meditative reflections on Jesus Christ—his person, mysteries, humanity, and divinity, and his messages for modern man. The style is poetic-philosophical, rich in insights, yet warm and pious, typical of the French Catholic renewal of the 20th century.

The work is not a classic theological treatise, but a spiritual meditation intended for believers who wish to know and love Christ more deeply. Sertillanges addresses topics such as the Incarnation, Christ’s love, suffering, salvation, and Christ as the model of Christian life. The book is written in clear, sublime language that combines philosophical precision with spiritual warmth.

In the Croatian context, this edition testifies to the strong Catholic spiritual production during World War II. It was published at a difficult historical moment, and its aim was to strengthen the faith and spiritual resilience of the readers. Today it is a rare antiquarian publication, sought after among collectors of Catholic literature.

Sertillanges is the author of numerous influential works (e.g. Intellectual Life), and this book is among his most famous spiritual writings. The book is still relevant today because it offers timeless reflections on the central figure of Christianity – Jesus Christ as Savior.
