Narodni preporod Italije I-II

Narodni preporod Italije I-II

Antun Dabinović

The National Revival of Italy I–II by Antun Dabinović shows the Italian Risorgimento from 1815 to 1870/1879, the process of political and national unification of Italy and the actions of its most important leaders.

The National Renaissance of Italy I–II is a historical work by the Croatian historian Antun Dabinović, published in 1939 by Matica Hrvatska. The book is divided into two volumes: the first covers the period from 1815 to 1849, and the second the period from 1849 to 1870/1879, following the key stages of the Italian national revival and the creation of the modern Italian state.

Starting from the situation after the end of the Napoleonic Wars and the decisions of the Congress of Vienna, the author shows the political fragmentation of the Apennine Peninsula, Austrian dominance in northern Italy, and the development of national and liberal movements that sought the liberation and unification of the country. Special attention is paid to the revolutionary movements of the 1820s and 1830s, the activities of Giuseppe Mazzini, the organization of Young Italy, and the **revolutions of 1848–1849. **which marked a turning point in the Italian Renaissance.

In the second volume, Dabinović deals with the period of political consolidation of the movement under the leadership of the Sardinian-Piedmontese monarchy. He analyzes the role of Count Camillo Benso di Cavour, diplomatic activities towards France and other European powers, the wars for liberation from Austrian rule, and the activities of Giuseppe Garibaldi, whose military campaigns contributed to the final unification of most Italian countries. A special place is occupied by the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861 and the gradual incorporation of Venice and Rome into a single state.

The work is written concisely and clearly, in accordance with the popular science tradition of the Matica Library, and is intended for a wide range of readers interested in European history. In addition to presenting Italian events, the book provides insight into the way Croatian intellectuals of the interwar period viewed European national movements, often comparing the Italian Risorgimento with other renaissance processes of the 19th century. Today it represents a valuable historiographical source and testimony to the Croatian reception of Italian history in the first half of the 20th century.
