The novel Mali pjevac (1928) by the writer Dolores Vieser is the first novel by this Austrian author and one of her most famous titles. The Croatian edition was printed in Đakovo in 1938 as the first edition of the Hrvatska obrana library, which began a series of novels intended for a wide range of readers of Catholic and family literature. The work quickly gained great popularity among Croatian readers and was sold out several years after its publication.

The novel is set in the historical setting of the Austrian Alps, where the author follows the life of a boy from a humble background gifted with exceptional singing talent. His gift opens the door to new experiences for him, but at the same time confronts him with numerous life challenges, temptations and moral dilemmas. Through his upbringing, a world marked by deep religiosity, strong family ties and traditional values ​​that shape the character of the main character is depicted.

Dolores Vieser is known for her vivid storytelling, convincing character development and emphasized spiritual dimension of her works. The novel intertwines elements of historical narrative, family chronicle and upbringing novel, with the author paying special attention to the inner development of the protagonist. The story emphasizes the importance of perseverance, humility, faith and responsibility, showing how true values ​​transcend material success and social position.

Written in a warm and accessible style, the work was intended for both younger and adult readers. Today The Little Singer represents an interesting example of Catholic popular literature of the interwar period and a testimony to the rich publishing activity of Đakovo in the late 1930s.
