Zen priče

A collection of 125 classic Zen stories and koans that convey the essence of Zen Buddhism – presence, no-thought, and enlightenment – in a simple, paradoxical way. With a foreword by Vladimir Devidé.

Zen Stories is an anthology collected and prepared by Dražen Gorjanski. The book contains 125 short Zen stories, anecdotes, koans and parables from the rich tradition of Zen Buddhism (mainly Chinese chan and Japanese zen).

The stories are short, often just a few sentences, and carry deep wisdom through paradox, humor, surprise and direct reference to reality. Classical motifs include teachers such as Zhaozhou, Huineng, Linji or Japanese masters, who through everyday situations (drinking tea, walking, meeting a beggar, cutting with a sword) break the usual way of thinking and lead the reader towards satori (enlightenment).

The foreword was written by Vladimir Devidé, a famous Croatian Japanologist, translator and promoter of Eastern culture and Zen Buddhism. Devidé introduces the reader to the history and philosophy of Zen, explains the concept of koan and the significance of this type of literature for Westerners.

The book is equipped with a traditional Chinese style (bound in the style of old books), which gives it a special, meditative charm. Gorjanski chose the stories so that they are accessible, but deep enough - ideal for everyday reading and reflection. They do not teach directly, but provoke the mind to transcend logic and duality (subject-object, good-evil, self-world).

This collection represents a valuable bridge between Eastern spirituality and the Croatian audience. At a time when interest in Buddhism and meditation was growing, Zen Stories became a popular read among those seeking inner peace, simplicity and a different perspective on life. The book is suitable for both beginners and those who already know Zen, because it can be read linearly or randomly - each story stands on its own as a small awakening shock.

Today it is considered one of the most famous Croatian anthologies of Zen literature and remains relevant for all who want to experience Zen through a story, and not just through theory.
