Absalom, Absalom! (1936) is a masterpiece by American Nobel Prize winner William Faulkner and one of the most important novels in modern world literature. Set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, it follows the life story of Thomas Sutpen, an ambitious immigrant who arrives in Mississippi in the early 19th century with a ruthless "plan": to create a wealthy plantation, establish a powerful dynasty, and secure social prestige.
However, Sutpen's empire crumbles under the weight of his own dark secrets, racial prejudice, incest, and fratricide during and after the American Civil War. Faulkner does not tell the story linearly, but through complex, fragmented, and contradictory accounts from four different narrators, most notably Quentin Compson. The characters, decades later, try to piece together the puzzle of Sutpen's family tragedy.
With a title that evokes the biblical lament of King David over his slain son, the novel builds a powerful allegory about the rise and fall of the slave-owning South. It is characterized by a distinctive stream-of-consciousness style, exceptionally long and complex sentences, and deep psychological and historical analysis. The work offers an uncompromising insight into sin, guilt, racial trauma, and the impossibility of escaping the past.
