Kraljevska krv

Sinclar Lewis

A powerful, socially critical novel by Sinclair Lewis concerning a bank and social standing. The discovery of the protagonist’s distant African ancestry exposes the deep-seated racial prejudices and hypocrisy of an American community.

The novel Kingsblood Royal (1947), by the renowned American Nobel laureate Sinclair Lewis, stands as one of the boldest and most compelling works of social criticism from the 20th century. The story follows Neil Kingsblood—a respected citizen, war veteran, and successful banker from the fictional town of Grand Ridge, Minnesota—who leads a quiet, privileged life within the white upper-middle class. A turning point occurs when Neil, while researching his family tree in search of noble or royal roots, discovers that one of his ancestors was Black. Although he is physically indistinguishable from white people, this revelation profoundly shakes his sense of identity. Rather than keeping the truth hidden and continuing to enjoy his social privileges, Neil decides to publicly acknowledge his ancestry. This act triggers an avalanche of reactions: former friends and neighbors turn their backs on him, he loses his job and social standing, and he finds himself facing overt hatred, racism, and intolerance from those around him. Through Neil’s fate, Lewis unflinchingly exposes the deeply ingrained racial prejudices, hypocrisy, and false morality of mid-20th-century American society. The novel remains a poignant and highly relevant story about human dignity, identity, and courage.
