Late Night Jazz – A Heavy Duty Smokin’ Session brings together celebrated jazz artists in a selection combining instrumental pieces and vocal standards. Sixteen performances offer different approaches to melody, rhythm and interpretation, from distinctive solo voices to orchestral swing. Their shared appeal lies in music that suits the quieter hours while offering plenty of detail for attentive listening.
John Coltrane opens the programme with Blue Train, followed by Judy Garland’s Moon River. Count Basie’s Broadway and Peggy Lee’s September in the Rain introduce different shades before Miles Davis contributes Round Midnight. Alternating instrumental and vocal numbers keeps the collection varied and gives each performance room to stand out.
Tony Bennett is represented by Jeepers Creepers, Sarah Vaughan contributes When Sunny Gets Blue, and Duke Ellington offers In a Mellow Tone. Billie Holiday’s Time on My Hands and the Nat King Cole Trio’s It’s Only a Paper Moon continue the sequence of distinctive interpretations. Charlie Parker’s My Old Flame and Thelonious Monk’s Off Minor further highlight the contrasting musical personalities within the collection.
The closing section features Ella Fitzgerald’s This Love of Mine, Quincy Jones’s Take Five, Ray Charles’s If I Give You My Love and Astrud Gilberto’s The Girl from Ipanema. The combination of voices and instruments makes the compilation accessible to newcomers and appealing to listeners who enjoy familiar standards. It is a selection for evening relaxation, company or rediscovering artists whose individual styles helped shape jazz.
