Meksički mučenici sa slikama
The historical-religious study *Mexican Martyrs* (1928) by P. Grgec presents an account of the persecution of the Catholic Church in Mexico, as well as testimonies of faith and martyrdom during the Cristero War.
The work Mexican Martyrs (Meksički mučenici), published in 1928 by the prominent Croatian Catholic publicist, writer, and social activist Petar Grgec, stands as one of the first domestic accounts and analyses of the severe religious persecution in Mexico during the 1920s (known as the Cristero War). In this book, the author provides a detailed historical, political, and theological insight into the circumstances that led to the conflict between the anti-religious state authorities and the Catholic population and clergy. With profound empathy and the sharp insight of a seasoned publicist, Grgec describes the fates of numerous victims—priests, religious, and laypeople—who suffered a martyr’s death while defending their faith and religious freedoms. Special emphasis is placed on the themes of sacrifice, steadfastness of spirit, and the ethical strength of the individual during periods of intense ideological repression. The author’s style is characterized by an engaged tone, a clear documentary approach, and a deeply rooted Christian worldview. The 1928 edition remains a valuable historical document regarding Croatian Catholic public discourse in the interwar period, as well as an important source for studying how global religious and social crises were perceived within Croatian society at that time.
