In "The Art of Loving," Fromm argues that love is an art that requires knowledge, effort, and practice, not just an emotion or a random occurrence. In modern society, people often understand love as an object to be "found," rather than as a skill to be de
Fromm emphasizes that true love is an active force – it does not mean being in love, but giving, caring, respecting and knowing the other. The author distinguishes several forms of love: brotherly love, maternal love, erotic love, love of self and love of God. Each of them has its own psychological characteristics, but they are all interconnected. Mature love includes responsibility, respect and knowledge, and its foundation is love of self, which does not mean selfishness, but a healthy sense of one's own worth.
Fromm criticizes the capitalist society that turns love into a commodity – in which people "trade" qualities and partners as products. Instead of authentic connection, alienation and superficiality develop. Love, according to Fromm, is the answer to the problem of human existence, the need to overcome isolation and achieve a deep connection with the world.
In conclusion, true love is not a passive feeling but an active decision and discipline – an art that, like any other art, is learned and perfected throughout life.
