A novel by Théophile Gautier, published in 1863. It is an adventure story set in 17th century France, which combines romance, humor and chivalry with elements of theater and social satire.

Captain Fracasse is an exciting story about an impoverished nobleman who joins a traveling acting troupe and then experiences a series of unusual and dangerous adventures. Dramatic love affairs, numerous fencing duels, chases, kidnappings, and unpredictable twists and turns are just some of the reasons to read this book with pleasure.

On several occasions, very successful adventure films were made based on the novel Captain Fracasse. The text is accompanied by extraordinary illustrations by Gustave Doré.
