Kletva 1-2

Kletva 1-2

August Šenoa

The story is set in medieval Zagreb and deals with the conflict between love and cruel justice. The plot follows a young girl, Janja, whose beloved, Jurko, is unjustly convicted and executed on the false charge of murdering the son of a prominent citizen.

After Jurko's death, Janja, in despair, pronounces a terrible curse on the city and its inhabitants. Her words resonate like an ominous prophecy, and Zagreb is soon struck by misfortunes - plague and famine. The city becomes a place of sorrow and pain, and people begin to believe that Janja's curse is truly the cause of their suffering.

Over time, the true truth about Jurko's innocence is revealed, but too late - the evil has already happened, and the fate of the city is sealed by Janja's curse. The story powerfully depicts human powerlessness in the face of injustice and the forces of fate, and warns of the disastrous consequences of hasty judgments and cruelty.

Šenoa skillfully evokes the dark atmosphere of medieval Zagreb and uses rich language to convey the tragedy of the unfortunate characters. The Curse is a classic example of Šenoa's realism, imbued with folk beliefs and moral lessons, which encourage the reader to think about justice, guilt, and the consequences of human actions.
