Popkorn
An excellent novel by a Slovenian author about the media spectacle, the identity crisis and the superficiality of modern society. Through the destinies of the characters, he analyzes how pop culture turns real lives into cheap entertainment.
Popkorn (2009) is an award-winning novel by the prominent Slovenian writer and translator Andrej E. Skubic, offering a sharp and insightful analysis of contemporary consumer society. The author uses popcorn—a symbol of fast, cheap, and easily digestible entertainment—as a central metaphor for how modern media and pop culture treat human emotions, traumas, and everyday lives. The plot follows several interconnected characters whose fates collide in a world of media spectacles, sensationalism, and a constant race for attention. With an exceptional ear for dialogue and contemporary urban language, Skubic portrays individuals grappling with personal failures, loneliness, and identity crises, while their private dramas are transformed into commodities in the media marketplace. The prose is fast-paced, dynamic, and infused with dark humor, yet at its core, it delivers a profound and bitter critique of alienation. Popkorn spares neither the media nor the consumers, raising the question of whether it is even possible to forge authentic human connections in a world where everything has become entertainment. In this work, Skubic successfully blends sociological observation with superb storytelling, holding up a mirror to the present day.
