Eines der bedeutendsten Werke der Kunstgeschichte. Durch dieses Werk vermittelte Faure einen einzigartigen und persönlichen Blick auf die Entwicklung des künstlerischen Schaffens und verknüpfte es mit sozialen, historischen und philosophischen Umständen.

Faurés Interpretation von Kunst ist nicht nur eine chronologische Darstellung von Stilen und Werken, sondern eine tiefe Reflexion über den Zeitgeist, der den künstlerischen Ausdruck prägt.

Faure verwendet den Begriff „Geist der Form“, um zu erklären, wie künstlerische Ausdrucksformen die zugrunde liegenden Impulse und Bestrebungen einer Zeit widerspiegeln. Die Kunstform ist laut Faure nicht nur eine technische Manifestation, sondern Ausdruck des inneren Zeitgeists, kollektiver Überzeugungen, Ängste und Ideale.

Ihm zufolge ist Kunst die universelle Sprache, durch die die Menschheit im Laufe der Jahrhunderte kommuniziert, und die Entwicklung der Kunst ist die Geschichte der menschlichen Spiritualität.

Das Buch folgt dem chronologischen Verlauf der Kunstentwicklung, untersucht aber gleichzeitig die philosophischen und sozialen Aspekte jeder Epoche. Faure trennt Stile oder Epochen nicht streng, sondern analysiert deren gegenseitige Beeinflussung.
