Rječnik osobnih imena
A major work of Croatian onomastics, the result of fifteen years of dedicated work. This dictionary includes over 9,000 basic names and tens of thousands of derivatives, surpassing similar world directories.
Šimundić collected data through field research throughout Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia, relying on direct interviews with the bearers of the name. The dictionary omits Muslim names of oriental origin, as a separate dictionary already existed for that group.
The dictionary is structured according to the "cluster" system, where the basic name is listed with the corresponding derivatives (diminutives, augmentatives, hypocoristics, etc.), which provides insight into the richness and diversity of Croatian anthroponymy. Šimundić invested special effort in the etymological analysis of names, often offering new and unique interpretations of origin and meaning, not relying exclusively on existing etymological literature.
This book is an indispensable source for linguists, historians, genealogists, but also for anyone who wants to understand the meaning and history of personal names in the Croatian language in more depth.
