Desanka Maksimović

On her sixteenth birthday, she presents poems about youth, love, nature, longing, and the homeland. From tender love verses to the harrowing *Bloody Fairy Tale*, Desanka Maksimović celebrates life, emotions, and human dignity.

On the Sixteenth Birthday is a poetry collection by Desanka Maksimović, published in the "Lastavica" series by the Sarajevo-based publishing house Veselin Masleša. The selection brings together the characteristic themes of her poetry: youth, love, nature, longing, transience, childhood, the homeland, and human suffering. The title poem, "On the Sixteenth Birthday," expresses the feelings of a girl on the threshold of youth—her joy of living and her yearning for a love yet unknown. Nature—fields, flowers, water, the sun, the wind, and the stars—becomes part of her inner world, serving as a symbol of vital energy, freedom, and the anticipation of love.

Desanka Maksimović’s love poetry is marked by tenderness and sincerity, yet also by an apprehension regarding the fleeting nature of emotions. Love appears as a premonition, a longing, and the joy of meeting, but also carries the possibility of parting and disappointment. Nature often mirrors the mood of the lyrical speaker; thus, human emotions become intertwined with spring, rain, flowers, and the changing seasons.

Another significant aspect of the collection consists of patriotic and wartime themes. Particularly notable is "A Bloody Fairy Tale" (Krvava bajka), a poignant poem inspired by the execution of schoolchildren and other civilians in Kragujevac in 1941. Through it, the poet transforms the tragedy of the innocent into an enduring condemnation of wartime violence. The collection thus reveals the broad scope of Desanka’s poetry: from the intimate feelings of a young person and the rapture inspired by the beauty of the world to empathy with human suffering. Simple yet melodious expression, powerful imagery of nature, and immediate emotional resonance make these poems accessible to young readers, while simultaneously speaking to universal experiences of love, hope, fear, loss, and growing up.
