Grešnik (1985), prvi deo trilogije Vreme zla, je istorijski roman smešten u Srbiju između dva svetska rata. Roman prati sudbinu intelektualca Ivana Katića, istražujući teme ideološkog sukoba i sloma društvenih vrednosti u jednom turbulentnom periodu.

Ivan Katić, idealistički intelektualac i bivši veteran Prvog svetskog rata, suočava se sa duhovnom i egzistencijalnom krizom u međuratnoj Srbiji. Dok se zemlja bori sa političkim previranjima i usponom komunističkih ideja, Ivan se nalazi rastrzan između svojih uverenja, porodičnih očekivanja i društvenih pritisaka. Njegova potraga za istinom i pravdom dovodi ga u sukob sa prijateljima i porodicom, dok se bori sa osećanjima krivice i „greha“ zbog svojih nekonformističkih stavova. Istovremeno, roman prikazuje šire društvene sukobe – od klasnih tenzija do političkih zavera – kroz sudbine likova poput Bogdana Dragovića i Milene Katić, koji otelotvoruju različite ideologije.

Ćosićev bogat, introspektivni stil i detaljna istorijska pozadina čine „Grešnicu“ snažnim prikazom moralnog i ideološkog sukoba. Roman dovodi u pitanje prirodu greha, žrtve i lične odgovornosti u vremenima političke polarizacije. Cenjen zbog svoje psihološke dubine i autentičnog prikaza srpske istorije, „Grešnica“ je ključno delo u trilogiji „Vreme zla“, koja duboko odjekuje temama čovečnosti i otpora.
