Dorotej

Dorotej

Dobrilo Nenadić

The novel Dorotej is a historical story about a young doctor in a monastery in medieval Serbia who struggles between science, faith and love. Through his fate, the author examines morality, freedom and human responsibility.

Dorotheus is a historical novel by Serbian writer Dobrilo Nenadić, first published in 1977. Set in the 14th century, the novel depicts the fate of a young doctor, Dorotheus, who comes from a monastery in Constantinople to a Serbian monastery to treat monks suffering from the plague. However, he soon faces much more difficult questions – the boundaries between science and religion, truth and dogma, duty and love.

Dorotheus, with his free spirit and rational approach, arouses the distrust of the church hierarchy. When conflicts flare up in the monastery between spiritual authority and human passion, his knowledge and moral strength are put to the test. Through him, Nenadić depicts the conflict between reason and faith, but also the eternal search for truth in a world full of prejudice.

The novel is characterized by philosophical depth, rich language and strong symbolism. Nenadić skillfully brings to life the ambiance of medieval Serbia, but with themes that transcend the era – freedom of thought, responsibility and the limits of humanity.

In 1981, a film of the same name Dorotej was made based on the novel, directed by Živorad "Žika" Mitrović, with Ljubiša Samardžić in the title role. The film faithfully follows the spirit of the novel, emphasizing the psychological and moral dimension of the hero and the atmosphere of anxiety and spiritual struggle.

Dorotej is a powerful parable about the conflict between reason and dogma, in which Nenadić combines historical authenticity with universal human drama.
