Bajka o glinenoj ptici

Bajka o glinenoj ptici

Grigor Vitez

The collection presents imaginative, witty, and fantastic stories about children, animals, and unusual events. Vitez blends reality with the wondrous, using play, humor, and a child's imagination to explore themes of freedom, kindness, and growing up.

The Tale of the Clay Bird is a collection of fairy tales and stories for children by Grigor Vitez, a pioneer of modern Croatian children's literature. First published in 1964, the book presents a series of imaginative tales that blend the everyday world of childhood with the fantastic, the wondrous, and the impossible. Vitez does not seek to impose direct moral lessons on children; instead, through humor, play, and unexpected twists, he encourages them to use their imaginations and think independently.

The stories include About the Rabbit Who Loved to Laugh, The Pencil from a Dream, and The Story of the Sun That Bodo Likely Made Up. In the first, the unusual Long-Eared Bunny uses his cheerfulness and laughter to outwit a dangerous wolf. In The Pencil from a Dream, a boy named Veljko encounters a magical pencil capable of writing just like the person assigning it a task, thereby transforming ordinary school life into the realm of fantasy. In the story about the Sun, a child's imagination once again alters the familiar world, revealing just how extraordinary reality can become when viewed through a child's eyes.

These stories share common traits: humor, playfulness, spontaneous dialogue, the personification of animals and objects, and a fluid interweaving of reality and dreams. Vitez takes the child's need for play and imagination seriously, creating a world where the unusual is not a threat, but an opportunity to discover something new. The collection thus represents a characteristic example of his shift away from strictly didactic children's literature toward modern prose that places the child's perspective, freedom, cheerfulness, and creative imagination at the center.
