Poezija i proza

Poezija i proza

Fran Galović

The selection of Poems and Prose by Fran Galović, edited by Nada Pavičić-Spalatin, presents a cross-section of the work of one of the most prominent representatives of Croatian modernism.

The book Poetry and Prose by Fran Galović, in a selection and with an extensive afterword by Nada Pavičić-Spalatin, provides a comprehensive insight into the exceptionally rich, albeit prematurely extinguished literary oeuvre of this versatile author. The selection includes representative units: early poems (Salome, Morning, Sinful Love and Childe Harold), the anthological Kajkavian collection Z mojih bregov, then the story Začarano ogledalo, the expressionist drama Tamara and the astute critical review of Vojnović's Gospodja sa suncokretom.

The publication is particularly valuable for its groundbreaking poetic breakthrough in the collection Z mojih bregov, in which Galović, through melancholic and deeply intimate motifs of the Podravina homeland, land and transience, reaches the pinnacle of Croatian Kajkavian lyricism. In addition to poetry, prose works and dramatic texts depict his stylistic evolution from impressionism and Matošev's aesthetics towards modern psychological expression. The afterword by Nada Pavičić-Spalatin expertly and contextually illuminates Galović's complex writer and poet profile, making this book a key piece of literature for studying the roots and development of Croatian literary modernity.
