"Tales from the Past" by Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić is a collection of fairy tales inspired by Slavic mythology and folk tales, often called the "Croatian Grimms". The work, published under the pseudonym "Ivana", contains eight stories that combine imagination, moral lessons and a deep connection to nature, spirits and human virtues. The author creates a magical world where mythical creatures – witches, fairies, domestic spirits – meet ordinary people, exploring themes of justice, courage and love.

Brlić-Mažuranić masterfully uses archaic language, creating an atmosphere of ancient times, while her stories exude universal values – honesty, courage and compassion. The characters, often ordinary peasants or children, face supernatural challenges, but they triumph through moral strength. The collection is deeply rooted in Croatian and Slavic tradition, but its universality has ensured its worldwide reputation, with translations into numerous languages and a nomination for the Nobel Prize. "Tales from Long Ago" remains a classic of children's literature, but also a literary work that enchants adults with its poetics and depth.
