Sajam taštine

William Makepeace Thackeray

One of the most important novels of the Victorian era, written as a "novel without a hero". The author focuses on two main female characters: the resourceful, ambitious and ruthless Becky Sharp and her opposite – the gentle, passive and good-natured Ameli

The story takes place in England and the European continent during the Napoleonic Wars. Becky, a poor painter's daughter, uses her intelligence and charm to rise to the top of society. Unlike her, Amelia was born into a wealthy family, but her life is marked by personal loss, especially her marriage to the egotistical George Osborne. Becky, married to the adventurer Rawdon Crawley, constantly manipulates people in order to gain wealth and social position.

The novel uses satire and irony to depict social norms, class differences, and the vanity of the society of the time. Thackeray exposes the moral hypocrisy of the aristocracy, greed, and superficiality, while directly involving the reader with his narrative style.

In the end, although Becky survives numerous scandals, her life remains empty and cold, while Amelia finds belated happiness with Captain Dobbyn, a symbol of quiet, selfless love.
