Psihološki roman talijanskog pisca i redatelja Maria Soldatija o ljubavnom trokutu, kasnije adaptiran u film: talijanski profesor Edoardo, američka supruga Edith i njezina prijateljica Anna. Strast, prevara i tragedija.

Glavni junak Edoardo Talucci, mladi talijanski student američke književnosti, 1960-ih odlazi u SAD. U Connecticutu se zaljubi u Edith Sladek, plavu, hladnu djevojku češkog podrijetla koja radi u studentskoj menzi. Nakon povratka u Italiju vjenčaju se.

U trenutku izgovaranja „da“ u pijemontskoj crkvi Edoardo prvi put ugleda Annu Russo, Edithinu najbolju prijateljicu i šogoricu (suprugu njezina brata Vaclava). To je ljubav na prvi pogled. Dva para zajedno otputuju na medeni mjesec u Veneciju, a potom žive u Americi (Edoardo predaje na Berkeleyju).

Edoardo ulazi u strastvenu tajnu vezu s tamnom, senzualnom Annom, dok istovremeno ostaje privržen Edith. Ne može odabrati između ljubavi i tjelesne strasti. Igra se nastavlja godinama, sve dok Edith ne oboli od teške bolesti (tumora mozga). Nakon njezine smrti Edoardova strast prema Anni jenjava.

Soldati s humorom, psihološkom oštrinom i filmskom tehnikom flashbacka istražuje želju, krivnju, ljubomoru i život u rascjepu između dviju kultura i dviju žena. Kratak, elegantan i intenzivan roman o nemogućnosti potpune sreće.
