Slava

Slava

Stipo Bilić

Award-winning historical novel by Stipe Bilić from 2019. Through the female perspective of Slava pl. Ištvanić, the author brings a warm and moving story about her life, family, and devoted love with August Šeno.

"Slava" (published in 2019 as the winner of the Albatros literary award) is an exceptional historical and biographical novel by the Velika Gorica author Stipe Bilić. The book is dedicated to the life of the Turopolje noblewoman Slava pl. Ištvanić, best known in history as the wife and life muse of the great Croatian writer August Šenoa. The special value of this novel lies in its narrative perspective — Bilić shapes the story from Slava's very intimacy and consciousness, giving voice to the woman who bore the burden of everyday life in the shadow of the great writer. The plot follows her life path: from growing up in Velika Gorica, schooling in a monastery and the fateful meeting with Šenoa at a ball in 1867, to a married life marked by poverty, family tragedies, but also unwavering mutual love and support. The author skillfully plays with the meaning of the title itself, connecting the name of the main character with the concept of transient, earthly glory versus the eternal "glory of love" and loyalty to the people and family. Written in fluent, emotional and stylistically refined language, the novel evokes with great respect the spirit of the 19th century and the cultural heritage of Turopolje. "Glory" is a warm, instructive and extremely moving literary work that combines historical authenticity with deep human emotions.
