Menuet za gitaru

Menuet za gitaru

Vitomil Zupan

Vitomil Zupan’s cult novel intertwines the author’s contemporary journey through Spain with his partisan memories from the Dolenjska region, offering an uncompromising and ironic perspective on the war.

The novel Minuet for Guitar is a seminal work by Slovenian writer Vitomil Zupan that liberates war-themed literature from ideological constraints. Due to his uncompromising nature, bohemian lifestyle, and clashes with the social norms of the time, Zupan spent years in a communist prison; yet, it was precisely from this immense experience that his exceptional literature emerged.

The novel’s layered structure intertwines two narrative strands: a framing story in which the aging writer and former partisan Jakob Bergant Berk stays in Spain and encounters a former German soldier, and a central, embedded narrative that evokes the war years from 1943 onwards. Moving across the landscapes of Dolenjska and Suha Krajina to the scenes of dramatic battles, the author portrays war not through sentimentality, but as an existential laboratory where man is cast into the chaos of the world. Through encounters with fellow fighters—such as the Spanish Civil War veteran Anton—he demystifies the concept of heroism and dissects the absurdity of violence.

Infused with subtle irony, eroticism, and reflections on art and fear, Minuet for Guitar remains an unforgettable literary journey. The edition is further enriched by an exhaustive afterword by Taras Kermauner, which offers profound insight into the writer’s position and artistic genius. A superb read for admirers of provocative prose.
