The novel Minuet for Guitar is a seminal work by Slovenian writer Vitomil Zupan that liberates war-themed literature from ideological constraints. The novel’s layered structure intertwines two narrative strands: a framing story in which the aging writer and former partisan Jakob Bergant Berk stays in Spain and encounters a former German soldier, and a central, embedded narrative that evokes the war years from 1943 onwards. Moving across the landscapes of Dolenjska and Suha Krajina to the scenes of dramatic battles, the author portrays war not through sentimentality, but as an existential laboratory where man is cast into the chaos of the world. Through encounters with fellow fighters—such as the Spanish Civil War veteran Anton—he demystifies the concept of heroism and dissects the absurdity of violence.
