Karmen / Kolomba

Karmen / Kolomba

Prosper Mérimée

Carmen is a story set in Spain and follows the tragic love between the gypsy temptress Carmen and the soldier Don José. Colomba is a story set in Corsica and tells a story of brotherhood, revenge and family honor.

  • Carmen: Carmen is a free, passionate and unbridled woman who seduces Don José, a virtuous soldier, and leads him on a path of ruin. The infatuated Don José leaves the army, joins the smugglers and sinks deeper and deeper into crime. However, Carmen rejects him as soon as she loses interest in him. In despair and jealousy, Don José kills her. In "Carmen", Mérimée explores the themes of fatal passion, freedom and untamed nature, creating a powerful psychological portrait of ruin under the influence of passion.

  • Colomba: The young Corsican officer Orso della Rebbia returns home after the death of his father. His sister Colomba urges him to avenge their father's murder, which is rooted in Corsican customary law. Orso finds himself torn between his desire for a civilized life and his sense of duty to his family's honor. An encounter with the English tourist Lydia Nevil further influences his thinking. In the end, Colomba herself initiates a blood feud. Through "Colombe," Mérimée explores the conflict between wild tradition and modern moral values.
