His affair with Lucy Zucker, the wife of a wealthy industrialist, allows him to acquire confidential information that he uses for financial gain. However, when Zucker discovers the betrayal, he takes revenge by burning down their newly built, unsecured factory, which leads to the downfall of the three friends.
The novel explores themes of greed, moral degradation, and dehumanization in the context of rapid industrialization. Reymont depicts Łódź as a city of heartless capitalism, where human values are suppressed in the pursuit of profit.
