His affair with Lucy Zucker, the wife of a wealthy industrialist, allows him to acquire confidential information that he uses for financial gain. However, when Zucker discovers the betrayal, he takes revenge by burning down their newly built, unsecured factory, which leads to the downfall of the three friends.
