The novel takes place in the 19th century, and tells the story of two young friends, the fourteen-year-old Pole Stanislaw and his eight-year-old friend Nel from England, who were kidnapped in Sudan by the rebels of the Muslim priest Mahdi.

The rebels together with the children go on a grueling and dangerous journey through the desert to take the children to the Mahdi. Once they get there, the Mahdi turns them away and the children stay in the war-torn city. After some time, their journey continues, but it is interrupted by an attack by a lion, so the frightened rebels, who did not want to fire a firearm, give a rifle to Stanislaw, who kills the lion and several rebels. Then the children continue their escape through the African rainforest, no less dangerous or exciting than the desert, so that, with the help of newly arrived friends, they finally get their freedom.
