Ovo je roman sa autobiografskim elementima, u kome autor, kroz lik pisca u zrelijim godinama, razmišlja o sopstvenom životu, istoriji, identitetu i političkoj stvarnosti Mađarske u to vreme.

Radnja romana je smeštena u jesen 1986. godine, u Budimpešti, gde glavni lik boravi kao stipendista u kući pisaca. Tokom boravka, priseća se prošlosti - ličnih trauma, nacizma, logora, socijalizma, ali i razočaranja u sve političke sisteme. Upoznaje kolege pisce, intelektualce i birokrate, i kroz njihove sudbine i razgovore stiče dublje uvide u društveno-političke procese, posebno u stagnaciju socijalističkog sistema koji se bliži kraju.
