"Mein lieber Petrović" is an epistolary novel by Milovan Danojlić, which, through the letters of an emigrant from Paris, portrays the image of the West and the homeland with a lot of bitter humor, longing, irony, and cultural uprooting.

With the work "Mein lieber Petrović", Milovan Danojlić creates a striking epistolary novel composed of letters that the main character, a Serbian emigrant in Paris, sends to his friend Petrović in his homeland. The title, which combines German and Serbian words, immediately foreshadows the central motif – linguistic and cultural hybridity and the split of a man caught between two worlds.

The letters are imbued with a specific Danojlić spirit, bitter humor and refined irony. From the perspective of the bearer of the "western paradise", the hero dispels illusions about an easy life in a foreign country. Through observations about Parisian everyday life, the coldness of capitalist society and the alienation of the individual, the author does not cheapen criticism of the West, but also exposes nostalgic misconceptions about the homeland. In the letters, the homeland remains idealized in memory, but also recognized in its flaws and difficult historical legacy.

Through an intimate dialogue with an absent friend, Danojlić builds a touching story about loneliness, language as a last refuge and the search for identity. "Mein lieber Petrović" remains one of the most mature works on the subject of emigration in Serbian literature, where individual fate rises to a universal diagnosis of modern uprooting.
