Zwei Brüder, die im Widerspruch zur Handlung einer jüngeren, korrupten und betrügerischen Kreatur stehen, ist ein Thema, das bereits in den Grundlagen vieler literarischer Werke bekannt ist.

Aber an einem so fast banalen Ausgangspunkt, als der jüngere Bruder den älteren vor seinem Vater als Dieb verleumdet (und das ist ein gewöhnliches Studentenverbrechen) und sein ehemaliges Haustier verflucht, wird Schiller in seiner weiteren Dramaturgie Die Entwicklung macht starke Striche aus seiner manchmal schwer zu bändigenden Feder, um solche Charaktere darzustellen, die mit ihren titanischen Zügen manchmal fast außerirdisch wirken.
