A comprehensive lexicon that explains the origin, meaning, and usage of foreign words in the Croatian language. The first edition, created after Anić's earlier Dictionary of Foreign Words (1982), was expanded with Goldstein's collaboration, bringing a lar
The dictionary includes about 50,000 entries, including terms from various fields: science, technology, art, politics, religion and everyday language. The structure of the dictionary includes etymological data, pronunciation, grammatical information and examples of use, often with an emphasis on the adaptation of foreign words to the Croatian language.
Special attention is paid to loanwords from Latin, Greek, English, German, French and other languages, with an explanation of their cultural and historical context. Anić and Goldstein sought to reconcile scientific precision with accessibility, making the dictionary useful for a wide audience – from students and experts to ordinary readers.
The work stands out for the clarity of definitions and the emphasis on the Croatian language norm, which makes it an important tool for the preservation of linguistic culture. Although it is criticized for the occasional lack of newer loanwords, it remains a standard work of Croatian lexicography.
