Soj i odžak ehli-Islama

Soj i odžak ehli-Islama

Ferid Karihman

A collection of poems about the home and lineage of Muslims of Croatian descent and language.

To the numerous anthologies of Croatian poetry, Ferid Karihman, a valuable Croatian cultural worker, adds a new one, entitled “Soj i odžak ehli-Islama” (Genus and Home of Muslims), which is better explained by its subtitle “A collection of poems about the home and lineage of Muslims of Croatian descent and language”. This collection, like any other of this kind, was compiled within the limited possibilities and unfavorable circumstances abroad, because the Editor could not always access the material from the homeland, especially not the verses of the youngest ones, because he did not want to “compromise” them with connections to emigration, which is a serious “crime” in today’s times. The very nicely furnished book is enriched by several drawings of Bosnian-Herzegovinian motifs by Vladimir Pintarić.

The title poem, "The Black Rabbit," represents a kind of symbolist maneuver within "real" poetry, because like Baudelaire's "Albatross," it possesses a pronounced unambiguous charge.
